Trump Gloats After Democrat TX Rep. Al Green Loses Primary Race

President Donald Trump celebrated as longtime Texas Democrat Rep. Al Green lost his primary race, labeling the longtime legislator a “lunatic.”

Green, who’s been in office for 21 years, lost in a blowout on Tuesday to state Rep. Christian Menefee (TX-18), who received roughly 70% of the vote to Green’s 30%.

After originally representing Texas’ 9th district since 2005, Green decided to run for the 18th District following Republicans’ redistricting efforts redrawing congressional maps last summer.

Over the past decade Green called attention to himself by aggressively going after Trump, filing articles of impeachment against him six times, none of which advanced to the next stage of the legislative process.

Rep. Green also held the distinction of being removed from two separate addresses by President Trump to Congress, most recently during the 2026 State of the Union Address, where he carried a sign reading “BLACK PEOPLE AREN’T APES,” after Trump shared a video with a Lion King-inspired meme attached on the end depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as monkeys.

Trump took a victory lap on Truth Social Wednesday morning following Green’s defeat, writing,

Congratulations to the Dumocrat Party! Al Green, one of the most mentally deficient Congressmen in the history of our Country, has lost, in a landslide, his seat in Congress – But I will miss that lunatic not screaming and violently waving his cane at me during my next State of the Union Speech. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!! President DJT

Green’s defeat means Menefee will face-off against Republican nominee Ronald Whitfield in November’s general election.
