An illegal alien from Mexico is facing a slew of charges following a hit-and-run collision that left two Michigan residents in critical condition, authorities say.

The horrifying incident unfolded on July 1 in Waterford Township, located in Oakland County, Michigan.

Investigators say the driver of a Chrysler minivan blew a red light and crashed into a Harley-Davidson motorcycle carrying a pair of local residents — a 64-year-old male and 71-year-old female.

The driver fled the scene but was pulled over a short time later by Waterford Police, who called U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) for assistance after learning the suspect’s immigration status was in question.

He was identified as Jose Manuel Cazarez-Pulido, 33.

Officers found an open Budweiser beer bottle inside the vehicle, but determined that Cazarez-Pulido “did not appear intoxicated,” accord to the Department of Justice (DOJ).

He was cited for Open Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle, Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident, and Disobey Red Traffic Signal, and the DOJ has also charged him with illegal re-entry after prior removal.

Cazarez-Pulido was previously deported from the U.S. after being arrested in Southern California in February 2025, but slipped back across the border at a unspecified location and date.

Cazarez-Pulido has been provided a translator and public defender.

“This case underscores the critical importance of our mission to secure the border and protect our communities. The illegal re-entry of this alien, Jose Manuel Cazarez-Pulido, not only violated our laws but also led to a tragic incident where two individuals were critically injured,” said USBP Detroit Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Javier Geronimo, Jr.

“We are committed to working closely with our law enforcement partners, like the Waterford Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, to ensure that those who illegally re-enter the United States and endanger our citizens are held accountable.”

The injured victims have not been identified and their current conditions remain unclear.
