The US Navy has warned commercial shipping of “dangerous activities” in the Strait of Hormuz, including the laying of fresh mines. The warning states that Iranian minelaying vessels will be targeted, as the US blockade of the Strait continues.
The warning was issued on Friday by US Naval Forces Central Command and shared with shipping operators.
“The maritime security threat level in the [Strait of Hormuz] remains critical due to ongoing military conflict,” said the advisory, issued on the same day President Trump said the Strait must be opened “immediately” and that all mines there must be “terminated.”
“Iran continues to attempt illegal control of the Strait of Hormuz, to include dangerous and illegal mining that places ships and mariners at risk,” the advisory continues.
“The United States is committed to freedom of navigation… Any vessel observed to be engaged in, or supporting, mine-laying activities will be targeted by U.S. forces in self-defense.”
Earlier in the week, the US military said it conducted “self-defense strikes” against Iranian missile sites and boats trying to lay mines in the Strait.
On Saturday, the US Navy disabled another ship in the Strait of Hormuz as it attempted to run the US blockade.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) released a statement on X about the incident.
A hellfire missile was fired by a naval aircraft after a Gambian-flagged ship failed to respond to multiple warnings about the blockade.
“CENTCOM forces observed M/V Lian Star transiting international waters toward an Iranian port on the Gulf of Oman and issued more than 20 warnings while informing the vessel it was in violation of the U.S. blockade,” the statement said.
“A U.S. aircraft disabled the vessel by firing a Hellfire missile into the ship’s engine room after Lian Star’s crew failed to comply. The ship is no longer transiting to Iran.”
According to CENTCOM, the US navy has now disabled five ships and “redirected” 116 more since the blockade of the Strait began in April.
Speaking on Saturday in Singapore, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said the blockade is “very much still in place” as it was reported the US and Iran were edging closer to a deal to end the war and reopen the Strait, through which 20% of the world’s hydrocarbon exports pass under normal conditions.
Oils prices dropped significantly on Thursday amid news of a potential deal.
In a post on Truth Social on Saturday, President Trump revealed details of that deal, and said the Strait of Hormuz must be opened immediately, without tolls, and Iran will not be allowed to have nuclear weapons.
“Iran must agree that they will never have a Nuclear Weapon or Bomb,” he wrote.
“The Hormuz Strait must be immediately open, no tolls, for unrestricted shipping traffic, in both directions. All water mines (bombs), if any, will be terminated (we have removed, through detonation, numerous such mines with our great underwater mine sweepers. Iran will complete the immediate removal and/or detonation of any mines that are left, which will not be many!). Ships caught in the Strait due to our amazing and unprecedented Naval Blockade, which will now be lifted, may start the process of ‘heading home!’”
President Trump went on to say Iran’s stocks of enriched uranium, currently buried after US attacks on the facilities at Isfahan, Fordau and Natanz, must be removed, and he also said the US would not pay Iran any money—probably a reference to demands that Iranian assets, worth billions of dollars, be unfreezed.
“The enriched material, sometimes referred to as ‘Nuclear Dust,’ which is buried deep underground with virtually collapsed mountains, caused by our powerful B2 Bomber attack 11 months ago, sitting on top of it, will be unearthed by the United States (which, it is agreed, is the only Country, along with China, with the mechanical capability of doing so!), in close coordination and conjunction with the Islamic Republic of Iran, plus the International Atomic Energy Agency, and DESTROYED. No money will be exchanged, until further notice.”
Finally, he added, “Other items, of far less importance, have been agreed to. I will be meeting now, in the Situation Room, to make a final determination.”
A White House official later said the meeting lasted two hours.
So far, Iran has not responded to President Trump’s statements. A few hours earlier, the speaker of Iran’s parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said “no action will be taken before the other side acts.”
“We gain concessions not through dialogue, but through missiles; in negotiations, we merely make them understand this,” he wrote on X.
“The winner of any agreement is the one who, from the day after it, is better prepared for war.”
