The House of Representatives rejected an amendment Thursday which would have stripped section 224 from the 2027 National Defense Authorization Act, allowing the merger of the Israeli military into the U.S. military to go forward. The NDAA has still not been approved at this time.
Democrat Rep. Ro Khanna introduced the amendment to strip the foreign takeover section from the U.S. military spending bill. Only Democrat Rep. Sarah Jacobs joined Khanna. The amendment failed in a voice vote.
“The American people are tired of the arrogance and insolence of (Israeli) Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu telling America what we should do,” Khanna said on the House floor. “The entire country of Israel has a GDP that is less than a single town in my district, yet somehow Netanyahu thinks he can tell the American people what we should do.”
Some Representatives defended the Israeli takeover by downplaying it, implying it’s not a takeover, through some choice wording.
“…claims that this provision somehow cedes authority to a foreign government are simply ridiculous,” Republican House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers said.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was brought up in the discussion, which is notable as he calls it his plan.
“I strongly disagree with the notion that this is Congress just bowing to what Netanyahu wants,” Democrat Adam Smith said. “This is to our benefit.”
“Everyone in America — whether you’re a Republican, an independent or a Democrat — says that we need to tell Netanyahu that America calls the shots, not the prime minister of any other country,” Khanna said.
