Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jonathan Cain, the rhythm guitarist and keyboard player for legendary classic rock band Journey, recently told the Tom Barnard Podcast that he’s sick of musicians like Bruce Springsteen pushing leftist politics on audiences.
Noting that he “used to be a Democrat back in the old days,” Cain said he eventually “just couldn’t go there anymore,” saying, “I thought Obama, maybe but then I saw where he was going and I’m like, ‘Okay, we just can’t have this anymore.'”
“I’m a diehard conservative,” he explained. “And guys like Bruce Springsteen should shut up. You know, really, honestly, shut up, Bruce, you know? Him and who’s the other one? Robert DeNiro. I mean, who cares, guys?… Do your art. I try to keep politics out of my music.”
Cain revealed his wife Paula White-Cain is the Senior Advisor to the White House Faith Office and even held her latest birthday party at President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
The “Don’t Stop Believin'” musician continued to say he believes his job is to unify people, not to interject his political beliefs into the live shows.
“Now, people say, ‘Well, you’re a Christian, and you’re conservative,’ and I’m like, ‘So what?’ I don’t preach it onstage. I don’t spend 10 minutes, you know, talking about it. That’s who I am. I just don’t think it’s cool to have celebrities going there. It’s a bad look,” he stated. “And Bruce, I mean, what the heck? I used to like him, and now he’s just annoying. He’s an annoying, bitter old man. I mean, stop it. Really. You were born in the USA, weren’t you, dude? So act like it, you know? But even that song [Born in the USA], if you look at the lyrics, I mean, it’s a kind of a diss to our country.”
The rock star’s remarks come as Rolling Stones legend Mick Jagger made similar comments to the New York Times this month, telling the outlet that he thinks his job in the live music world is to allow concertgoers to have “the best time they possibly can and to forget their problems and the problems of the world,” adding, “And you don’t want to lecture them.”
