An “emotionally disturbed” suspect is in custody following a stabbing rampage that left at least six people injured in New York City on Sunday evening, authorities say.
The shocking bloodbath unfolded at around 7 p.m. inside Penn Station, just one day before Game 3 of the NBA Finals is set to take place directly above ground in Madison Square Garden.
Amtrak police rushed to the scene of the attack, which took place on the New Jersey Transit concourse.
A “black guy with grey hair” was arrested at the scene, according to an alleged bystander.
“He was about to come hit me but few white dudes rushed to protect everyone and we all ran back. It was very chaotic and a very unsafe situation. I didn’t know he hit 5 people but I saw him hit one with my eyes right in front of me,” the person wrote in a comment on a Fox 5 YouTube report.
A photograph purportedly snapped by a witness shows a man matching that description being taken into custody by NYPD.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated that six victims were injured and confirmed a suspect was in custody.
Law enforcement sources told the New York Post the suspect is an “emotionally disturbed” vagrant, although his identity has not been made public.
An investigation is ongoing.
