The Detention and Deportation Defense Initiative (DDDI) is a taxpayer-funded program in New Jersey that provides pro bono immigration counsel to illegal aliens in removal proceedings.

Law schools at several major universities, including Rutgers and Seton Hall, participate in the DDDI.

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill just announced plans to inject an additional $12 million into the DDDI, raising the total budget to more than $20 million.

“As the Trump Administration makes it more difficult for members of our community to challenge detention and deportation, access to qualified legal representation has never been more important,” Gov. Sherrill stated.

“Here in New Jersey, we are helping ensure more New Jersey residents receive due process under the law and more New Jersey attorneys are mobilized to stand up for the fundamental human rights of detainees and their families.”

Sherrill said the funding will cover legal expenses for all detainees at the Delaney Hall ICE facility in Newark, where Antifa and aligned militants have been rioting for weeks.

The planned increase in funding for the DDDI has received mixed reactions from New Jersey officials.

“This is great news. The DDDI is one of the best defenses we can provide for our immigrant neighbors,” said Assemblywoman Katie Brennan (D-32nd).

“New Jersey needs to show Trump and ICE that they are not welcome in our state, and that we will do everything in our power to shut down Delaney Hall and fight their lawlessness.”

State Senate Minority Leader Anthony M. Bucco blasted the move.

“We’re told there’s not enough money for our schools as districts weigh cuts to basic skills programs, sports, and student services, but there’s $20 million available for projects like this? Funding our children’s education should be the top priority. This tells us exactly where the Governor’s priorities lie.”
