Florida gubernatorial candidate James Fishback confronted Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) on Saturday, blasting the sitting congressman as an anti-white racist and a “DEI hire” outside an event.

Fishback and a crowd of supporters were waiting for Donalds when he arrived at the event in Lake City.

“Hey, Byron, am I a racist? Call me a racist to my face,” Fishback shouted through a bullhorn, as Donalds arrived in an SUV. “I talk about black-on-black crime, you don’t. You never mentioned Austin Metcalf’s name. You hate white people. Own up to it and accept it.”

The underdog Republican candidate vying for the governor’s seat continued, “Let’s have a real debate, Byron Donalds. You’re a coward. You’re a DEI hire. You didn’t earn crap.”

“You didn’t earn anything except the $4.6 million you made trading stocks in Congress. You should be in jail with Nancy Pelosi, the way you treated the January 6ers, the way you’ve treated the people of this country.”

Supporters carrying signs reading, “Byron, why won’t you debate Fishback?” then broke out into “Fishback!” chants as Donalds and his entourage approached the entrance to the event.

“DEI hire – didn’t earn it, Byron,” Fishback shouted as the candidate went inside, adding, “See you on the debate stage, baby.”

Fishback will face off against Donalds in the Republican primary this August; however, the Florida GOP this week released new rules delineating that candidates must have 10% support in a reputable poll, have raised over $10 million and have more than 10,000 unique donors in order to qualify for a debate, effectively shutting Fishback out.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis criticized the new rules on Friday, saying if they were in place when he ran he wouldn’t have been able to make the debate stage.

“I’ve heard secondhand what the criteria was. I wouldn’t have qualified when I ran in ‘18 for what they were trying to do,” DeSantis said, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Donalds campaign spokesman Gates McGavick noted the congressman also isn’t interested in debating because he doesn’t want to “legitimize campaigns that have failed to gain meaningful support,” adding that “There are no participation trophies in politics.”

Meanwhile, Fishback set up a televised debate with CBS for July 15, which he said he’ll attend “whether Byron Donalds shows or not.”

Fishback’s scheduling of an unsanctioned debate didn’t sit well with the Florida GOP, which on Friday rescinded his invitation to its Sunshine State Showdown candidate forum claiming he’d violated “rules governing official primary activities.”
