President Donald Trump on Sunday declared a deal had been reached with the Iranian government to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
“The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete,” the president announced on Truth Social Sunday afternoon, adding, “Congratulations to all!”
“I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade. Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”

In a follow-up post, Trump added…
This Great Deal will bring Peace and Security to the whole Region. Many presidents have tried to make Peace with Iran, and all have failed before me. The Leaders of the Region have, for the first time, found a President who can help them achieve real Peace. With the opening of the Strait upon the signing of the Deal on Friday, for purposes of mine removal, oil will flow on both ends again for the Region, and the World! President DONALD J. TRUMP
The negotiation comes as Trump on Sunday morning chastised Israel for attacking Beirut, Lebanon, killing three people, as details of the deal were being finalized, with Israeli authorities claiming they were targeting Hezbollah terrorists.
This morning’s attack on Beirut should not have happened, particularly on a special day when we are so close to a Peace Deal with Iran. Israel has the right to defend itself against threats, but the attack it was responding to was very small and meaningless, nobody was hurt, injured, or killed, and should not disrupt this important process. We are very close to a Deal that will bring peace to the region, including to Lebanon, and all sides should stand down. There should be no more attacks by Israel anywhere in Lebanon, but there should also be no more attacks by any other party, including Hezbollah, against Israel. This could be the beginning of a long and beautiful peace — Let’s not blow it! Thank you for your attention to this matter.
The crucial Strait of Hormuz shipping channel, through which oil and other Middle East commodities flow, has been closed for over 100 days after the US and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran at the end of February.
Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, confirmed on X that “Both sides have declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.”
“With the agreement now in place, mediators will facilitate a series of meetings this week,” Sharif added. “These pre-implementation discussions will lay the foundation for the technical talks and the official signing ceremony.”
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi likewise confirmed the deal, framing it as a victory for Iran.
The deal is set to be signed in Switzerland on Friday, after which text of the deal is expected to be made public.
Vice President JD Vance commented on the deal to Fox News on Sunday:

1. BLOCKS Iran from ever pursuing, procuring or obtaining a nuclear weapon
2. IMMEDIATELY opens the Strait of Hormuz
3. Lifts the US naval blockade
4. Opens up HUGE investments for the region… pic.twitter.com/ggIxdRlxXS
Popular X user and podcaster Mario Nawfal noted details of the deal published by Iran mentioned the Strait would reopen under its control, while one clause only reiterates Iran’s commitment not to produce nuclear weapons.
“The nuclear clause is Clause 9: Iran reiterates its commitment not to produce nuclear weapons. That’s it. No enrichment cap. No dismantlement. No inspector access beyond existing frameworks,” Nawfal reported. “The actual nuclear terms get negotiated in a separate 60-day window, and Clause 14 explicitly removes Iran’s missile program and support for resistance groups from the agenda entirely. Permanently.”

Better late than never, I suppose, but I’m skeptical it’s actually going to last.
