Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) issued a subpoena for Anthony Fauci Monday, citing the former NIAID head’s recent decision not to appear before Congress for voluntary testimony.
On Monday, Sen. Paul indicated he’d been working out an appearance date with Fauci’s lawyers and he’d agreed to testify this month, only for him to back out at the last minute.
“For six months, I have been negotiating with Anthony Fauci’s lawyers over a date to testify before my Homeland Security Committee,” Paul explained Monday on X. “He finally agreed to appear this month. Then he backed out. So I subpoenaed him. He will testify in July.”
The former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director will now be required to appear before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, chaired by Sen. Paul, next month on July 29.
Speaking to Semafor, Paul complained Fauci has been “slow-walking information to us for six months or more.”
“He agreed, then he said he wouldn’t. So, I think it’s time that we bring him in,” Paul said.
The Kentucky senator noted he has several questions for Fauci, including about his “pardon, gain of function research being funded when he said it wasn’t, and the destruction of records,” adding, “I think there’s a lot to discuss.”
Earlier this year, Sen. Paul had been urging the Justice Department to indict Fauci before a statute of limitations expired, arguing the feds had the sole power to hold him accountable over the Covid-19 cover-up and more.
Paul’s subpoena comes as outgoing Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard last week released “new evidence Fauci manipulated intelligence and lied to Congress,” claiming he hid the truth about Covid-19’s lab-made origins, his dangerous work on gain-of-function research and his role in manipulating intelligence community assessments.
“The COVID-19 pandemic caused tremendous hardship and pain for millions of our fellow Americans and for countless people around the world. After years of lies, censorship, and cover ups, the American people deserve transparency, truth, and accountability,” Gabbard wrote in a press release.
“The tactics used to hide the truth are straight from the deep state playbook: politicized self-serving leaders like Dr. Fauci covered up their own wrongdoing and abuses of power, manipulated intelligence, lied to Congress, and undermined a duly elected President by restricting his access to vital facts needed to keep the country safe. It’s time the American people learn the real story.”
