A woman was stabbed in France during an attempted rape by an African suspect who claimed to be 10 years of age, but may be much older, according to reports.
The shocking incident unfolded on June 15 in Saint-Brieuc, a city on the English Channel in Brittany.
A 22-year-old woman was jogging in a wooded area when she was approached by a knife-wielding juvenile who demanded she undress, prosecutors say.
When she refused, the boy stabbed her in the arm and abdomen and fled the scene.
On Tuesday, patrol officers spotted “an individual who fully corresponded to the report given by the victim.”
The suspect was searched and found to be in possession of a knife.
He was taken into custody and during an ensuing court hearing, he reportedly admitted to committing the horrific attack.
Due to his alleged age, authorities were only able to keep him in custody for a short period before releasing him to his parent(s).
“Since the law does not allow criminal measures for such young minors, the investigating judge ordered a provisional judicial educational measure with the boy being prohibited from contacting the victim nor leaving his home between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.,” France Info reports.
However, a medical examination that included a bone test indicated the suspect may actually be at least 14 years old.
“If confirmed, this change of age paves the way for greater criminal sanctions and possible detention,” Le Telegramme reported on Thursday.
Additional reports indicate the suspect is a migrant from the Democratic Republic of the Congo who arrived to France last year.
