The WNBA on Thursday declared a one-game suspension for Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas after footage went viral showing her hitting Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark in the throat after she fell.
Announcers expressed shock during a slow-motion replay amid Wednesday’s game in Indianapolis, showing Clark stumbling and falling while attempting to control the ball as other players seized on her, at which point Thomas shoved her fist into Clark’s throat.
Despite the obvious infraction, referees refused to call a foul against Thomas during the game, which Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White condemned at a later press conference.
“We have a generational talent and WNBA superstar who had two cheap shots [against her] right there that weren’t called,” the coach said. “Absolutely unacceptable.”
“No. 1, you’ve got to call it. It’s absolutely egregious and utterly disrespectful,” White said.
The upset coach went on to accuse WNBA refs of essentially ignoring calls when it comes to Clark.
“Absolutely disrespectful. We spent all offseason looking at officiating, and I still say the one thing that we keep asking for is consistency. [Clark] is not called the same way as everybody else is called. The fist in the throat is crazy. It’s crazy. It’s dangerous. … When you have these things continue to happen time and time and time again, eventually it gets frustrating.”
Satire site The Babylon Bee mocked refs’ lack of calls.
Clark ended up having to leave the game due to back issues with 5:15 left in the third quarter, and Indiana Fever lost 111-109.
“Upon postgame review, the Phoenix Mercury’s Alyssa Thomas has received a Flagrant Foul 2 penalty and a one-game suspension for recklessly making contact with her fist to the throat area of Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark,” the WNBA wrote in a press release Thursday, which stated Thomas “was deemed to have committed a non-basketball act.”
Clark, who was an NCAA all-star before joining the WNBA, has been a favorite target of her fellow Amazonian peers over the past two years.
Wednesday’s game followed another confrontational game between the two teams on Monday littered with technical fouls.
In another slight toward Clark, the superstar athlete, who has arguably made the otherwise boring female sport watchable, was left out of a poster commemorating the WNBA’s 30th anniversary.
“The league got a golden goose and is doing everything they can to kill her,” remarked conservative commentator Clay Travis.
The Fever and Mercury will face off again on Thursday, July 9 in Phoenix.
