A Haitian national who is in the U.S. illegally has been charged with vehicular homicide following a deadly collision that left a Pennsylvania State Trooper dead on Wednesday morning.

The horrifying incident unfolded at around 7 a.m. in Schuylkill County.

Trooper Michael Pahira, 44, was conducting a routine inspection of a tractor-trailer hauling trash on Interstate 81 when another big rig swerved onto the shoulder and collided with the stopped vehicles, the Republican Herald reports.

Pahira was trapped under the bumper of the at-fault semi, which burst into flames.

Construction workers attempted to rescue Pahira, but he never regained consciousness and was pronounced deceased at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Schuylkill in Pottsville.

Both truck drivers were treated for undisclosed injuries before Pennsylvania State Police took 33-year-old Michael Bon into custody on a slew of charges, including felony vehicular homicide, felony vehicular aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, and involuntary manslaughter.

Additionally, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer again Bon, an illegal alien from Haiti who was residing in Brockton, Massachusetts.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released the following immigration background on Bon:

  • 07/02/2024: Customs and Border Protection admitted Bon into the U.S. at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport via the CHNV parole program.
  • 10/26/24: Bon filed an Application for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) with USCIS under the Biden admin. TPS was never granted.
  • 06/13/2025: USCIS issued Bon a Notice of Termination of Parole, but he never left and remained in the U.S. illegally ever since.

The sanctuary state of Massachusetts issued Bon a Non-Domicile Commercial Driver’s License, which he reportedly renewed in February 2026, despite being in the U.S. illegally.

“Our hearts go out to the Pennsylvania State Trooper killed by a Haitian Illegal Alien truck driver. Mass deportations will prevent this from happening again. Why are we not conducting MASS DEPORTATIONS IN EARNEST?!?!” retired Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino wrote on X on Friday.

“With the death of Pennsylvania State Trooper Michael Pahira this week, everyone needs to understand a critical issue: state law enforcement agencies across the country have been refusing to partner with ICE and CBP to remove illegal alien truck drivers from the roadways,” American Truckers United stated.

Bon is being held in Schuylkill County Prison on $700,000 bail and is due in court for a preliminary hearing on July 16.
