US Strikes Iran, Tehran Strikes Back, Peace Negotiations Abandoned, More Strikes Expected

Following Iranian strikes on three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz Tuesday, the U.S. launched “powerful strikes” against Iranian targets. Tehran’s reasoning for attacking the ships stemmed from them taking a U.S.-approved southernly route out of the Strait instead of the Iranian-approved northerly route. Iran wants ships to exit Hormuz along their own coast to better justify collection of a toll.

“U.S. Central Command said American forces struck more than 80 Iranian targets, including air defense systems, radar sites and Revolutionary Guard vessels used to threaten shipping. Iran responded with strikes targeting U.S. military installations in Bahrain and Kuwait, fueling concerns the conflict could widen and sending oil prices sharply higher,” Fox News said Wednesday.

In retaliation, the Islamic Republic hit U.S. military targets in Bahrain and Kuwait.

“In the latest blow to the fragile ceasefire agreement, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it carried out a joint missile and drone operation against key US military sites in Bandar Salman, Bahrain’s Fifth Naval District and Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, and shot down a US MQ-9 drone attempting to interfere in the operation,” ABC News Australia said Wednesday.

President Donald Trump made inroads into ending the Iran war on June 17 with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding.

The Islamic Republic also signed the 14-point agreement, initiating a dialogue to formally conclude the war.

While meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte in Ankara, Turkey on Wednesday, Trump said that he considers the MoU to be “over,” and that the deal was “a waste of time.”

“For me, I think it’s over,” Trump said. “I don’t want to deal with them anymore.”

The President then called Iran “scum.”

“They’re scum, do you know what scum is? They’re scum. They’re sick people. They’re led by sick people. And they’re vicious violent people,” Trump said of Iran.

The President also said he expects to strike Iran again.

“We hit them very hard last night,” Trump said. “We’ll probably hit them hard again tonight.”

Trump was displeased over the Iranian attack on vessels which did not follow the Islamic Republic’s choice exit route from the Strait.

“They are behaving very badly,” he said.
