US Men’s World Cup Team Forced To Split $12.8 Million Reward With Women’s Team

The United States Men’s National Team will be sharing millions of dollars in winnings with the women’s squad due to U.S. Soccer’s equal-pay agreement after the boys made it to the round of 16 before losing to Belgium on Monday.

The FIFA prize money will be split among the 26 men on the American team and 26 women who make America’s 2027 Women’s World Cup roster, if they qualify for the tournament.

In 2022, following a lawsuit by the female squad, U.S. Soccer and both national teams agreed to a deal where the soccer federation keeps 20% of national team World Cup winnings and the rest is shared by the men’s and women’s teams.

The U.S. Men’s team was awarded $16 million this year, leaving $12.8 million after the federation’s cut.

Between both U.S. teams, that leaves around $246,000 for each player.

While the women’s team also has to share their victory money with the men, the deal is very lopsided as the female World Cup awards are much less than the men’s.

In their 2023 World Cup appearance the U.S. women’s team earned around $6 million for reaching the Round of 16, where they were ultimately eliminated.

The United States is the only country that mandates sharing FIFA World Cup prize money between its men’s and women’s national soccer teams.

The notion of the men’s squad sharing its earnings with the women was widely ridiculed online.

One social media account pointed out that the U.S. Women’s National Team once lost to a 15-and-under boys’ team.
