Democrat US Senate hopeful Graham Platner announced he’s suspending his campaign following allegations of sexual assault, which he denies.
In a video posted to social media Wednesday, Platner, who would have challenged five-term Republican incumbent Susan Collins in November, said he would exit Maine’s Senate race, and called for the people that supported him to choose his successor.
“We went toe to toe with one of the most entrenched political systems in the history of the world, and we won,” Platner said in an 11-minute video. “And now they are not going to let us have it, not if it’s me.”
Platner insisted the allegations weren’t his reason for exiting the race, saying, “We’re doing it because of the structures that are being taken away from us by those in power.”
“We believe that for the movement to continue, it can’t be me. And for that reason, we are suspending campaign operations,” he stated.
“What comes next needs to come from the people, needs to come from the people of Maine,” Platner stated. “It needs to be open, transparent and democratic. It needs to be reflecting the will and the values of the people that built this movement.”
Over the past week, Platner’s campaign has been marred by several allegations from his ex-wife and former girlfriends alleging he non-consensually engaged them sexually.
While Platner initially stood firm and attempted to dismiss the allegations, refusing to leave the race, they ultimately proved too much for his campaign to withstand.
His campaign has also previously faced headwinds due to controversy over a skull-and-crossbones tattoo that resembled the Nazi SS Totenkopf emblem.
Axios reports Platner intends to formally exit the race Monday – a quick exit is critical since plans to run must be filed by a July 13 deadline.
The Maine Democrat Party has until July 27 to name a new nominee.
The race is crucial for Democrats as Sen. Collins’ is the only seat held by a Republican in a state that Kamala Harris won in 2024.
NBC News reports Troy Jackson, a former state senator and Platner ally, is a current frontrunner vying for the Democrat nomination, in addition to a number of other candidates also throwing their hat in the ring.

A lightweight that can’t handle the predictable heat in the kitchen. Of course AIPAC funded Collins will get the benefit of dirty tactics, she’s one of the most obnoxious Israel Firster’s in the Senate. I wonder how much money or threats it took to get his former wife and girlfriends to remember an instance where they were laying in the same bed and he was in the mood but they weren’t. Technically, even something as mundane as an attempted kiss or brief touch of their body is “rape” if they said “no”. And of course this happened decades ago and no police report as is the standard modus operandi when paying for false allegations.
