ICE agents may resume stopping vehicles suspected of harboring illegal aliens, President Donald Trump announced Wednesday.
The president reversed the policy just one day after reports stated Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin had ordered agents to cease vehicle stops following two ICE-involved deaths in recent days.
“The men and women of ICE are doing a GREAT job, one that has to be done. CRIME IS WAY DOWN IN AMERICA, in many cases with numbers that haven’t been seen in decades,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Trump went on to explain, “The Open Border Policy of Sleepy Joe Biden allowed 25,000,000 people to pour into our Country, unchecked and unvetted. Many were Criminals, and we have to get them out.”
“In order to do this, we must be strong, tough, and smart, and we CANNOT give up one of I.C.E.’s most important and effective Crime Fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP!” he wrote, adding, “Once we do, we are playing right into the criminal’s hands.”
“The Radical Left Dumocrats would like to see this done, but it won’t happen on my watch,” he continued.
The president urged ICE agents to “be judicious, fair and smart, and go back and do your very important job.”
Trump’s message telling federal deportation agents to get back to work followed reports Tuesday that DHS Secretary Mullin had directed agents to “cease all non-urgent vehicle stops” at the behest of Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) following the ICE-involved shooting death of 26-year-old Columbian national Joan Sebastian Guerrero in Biddeford.
In that case, ICE noted, “The vehicle attempted to flee the scene and fearing for public safety an officer discharged his weapon.”
That death followed another ICE-involved shooting last Tuesday where officers in Houston, Texas, shot and killed 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was not the subject of a warrant, after he reportedly used his vehicle to ram officers.
Secretary Mullin echoed Trump’s sentiments on X, writing, “Our #1 goal is to keep our officers safe and get criminals OFF our streets. Illegal aliens will be arrested and deported wherever they are. If you are here illegally, LEAVE NOW. As our officers carry out operations to enforce our nations laws, they are facing a more than 1,300% increase in vehicle attacks.”
“We remind illegal aliens attempting to evade arrest is dangerous. This reckless illegal alien activity comes after sanctuary politicians held webinars and shared resources for how to openly defy @ICEgov,” he added, listing Democrat New York Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Dan Goldman, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, and California Gov. Gavin Newsom as just a few leftist politicians who’ve instructed illegals to resist detainment.

Mullin is an awful DHS director. He allows ICE protesters to inspect ICE vehicles, and now he ends traffic stops. Noem was much better, and Trump removed her.
