Fort Worth Police Chief Announces First Amendment Training Courses For Officers After Viral Video Exposed Policewoman Violating Christians’ Free Speech

Fort Worth, Texas, Police Chief Eddie Garcia released a video this week taking accountability for his department following viral footage of an officer threatening to cite Christian street preachers for “offensive” speech during last month’s Fort Worth Pride Fest.

Garcia said “there certainly was a better way” for his officer to communicate with the evangelists, adding, “We were wrong in the manner in which we communicated. Certainly we’re going to take accountability for it.”

The entire department was forced to undergo “refresher” First Amendment training, with Garcia confirming the command staff has already completed the courses and that sergeants and officers are next in line.

“We are not a perfect profession, and my officers will make mistakes from time to time,” he said. “We’re going to learn from it and get better from it and to ensure these things don’t happen again.”

One of the street preachers, David Grisham, is suing the FWPD for violating his rights.

His attorney recently said, “This ordinance was not followed because no officer performed a decibel check. Officers failed to follow the Fort Worth ordinance.”

Watch the original video below where a female cop told Grisham and his friend that they’d be ticketed “If someone [was] offended by [their] talking.”
