The CDC and FDA have warned that contaminated lettuce from fast food giant Taco Bell in five states is behind a recent outbreak in parasites causing digestive symptoms, including explosive diarrhea.
On Thursday, the federal agencies told the public to avoid eating shredded iceberg lettuce from Mexico at Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia, due to an outbreak of Cyclospora illnesses.
A joint investigation identified 1,644 reported infections, primarily localized to Michigan, and traced the outbreak back to lettuce from a single supplier in the area.

“There have been 94 hospitalizations, and no deaths have been reported,” according to the FDA.
In addition to diarrhea, the FDA notes other symptoms include “loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps/pain, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue,” adding that “Vomiting, body aches, headache fever may be noted.”
The infection could require antibiotics to treat, or resolve itself naturally over the course of a few weeks, while symptoms could be prone to relapse.
“FDA is working directly with the identified supplier to determine if potentially contaminated shredded iceberg lettuce remains on the market,” the agency wrote.
Neither agency commented on similar illnesses reported across 29 other states, but did note that “Additional states may be added to this advisory as more information becomes available.”
Taco Bell is cooperating with the health officials and will stop using lettuce from the supplier, as the investigation probes other possible restaurants, businesses, or brands which may have received contaminated supplies.
Shares for Taco Bell parent company Yum! Brands Inc. (YUM) tumbled on the news.
One victim who purchased Taco Bell Supreme tacos is suing Taco Bell after medical tests determined he had a cyclospora infection, TMZ reports.
Despite not being part of the Cyclospora outbreak, Taylor Farms on Friday announced their Mexican branch would voluntarily remove iceberg lettuce obtained from Central Mexico.
Add the disgusting parasitic outbreak to the list of reasons to avoid fast food.

Farms don’t always provide field workers with facilities to wash their hands after using the outhouse and third worlders aren’t educated in santitation. They don’t always have outhouses and toilet paper, the workers just squat in a row to take a dump. Restaurant workers don’t always bother to wash their hands after using the toilet because of poor upbringing.
You don’t need contaminated lettuce for that slop to give you Explosive Diarrhea
Canada just reported it today too. (Taco Bell owners must have been anti T-rump – that’s HIS m/o!!)
BTW, I don’t think Canada has Taco Bell.

Is it “Run for the border,” or

It’s only the lettuce causing it?
