A third US soldier has been killed, after attempting to detonate an Iranian drone.

In a post on X, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said that a service member in northern Iraq was killed on July 18 “during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone.”

A second service member was wounded with a minor injury.

Two other service members were killed on Friday during an Iranian attack on a base in Jordan and another remains missing.

“After a thorough search, U.S. military personnel found unidentified remains at the location earlier today. An examination process to verify the remains is ongoing,” CENTCOM said in a statement.

Before these three deaths, the last recorded death of a US servicemember was a helicopter pilot who crashed in the Arabian sea earlier this month.

Thirteen other servicemen have been killed so far, bringing the total to 20 since the beginning of the war, at the end of February.

Fighting has escalated over the weekend, with the targeting of bridges, water plants and power facilities in Iran.

On Sunday, the US hit a new nuclear power plant in Iran.

The Darkhovin facility in the southwest of the country, which is still under construction, was attacked, according to Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization.

“An attack on a peaceful nuclear facility under international safeguards is a clear violation of international law,” the organization said on X.

The extent of the damage was not revealed.

The International Atomic Agency has said the attack does not “pose any radiological risk” because there was no radioactive material there.
