Rand Paul Releases Slack Messages Showing Authors of Covid-19 Proximal Origin Paper Had Doubts About ‘Bat’ Origin Claims

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on Tuesday released chat messages sent between authors of Nature Medicine medical journal’s Proximal Origin paper, which showed they had doubts about whether Covid originated in a lab or came from a bat.

The messages, derived from chat service Slack, show the authors debating the odds of Covid coming from a lab versus zoonotic origins, with researcher Kristian Andersen putting the odds at “70/30 bat/lab,” while researcher Eddie Holmes initially rated it 80/20 bat/lab – despite the Proximal Origin paper asserting the disease could not possibly have originated from a lab.

Another Slack message from Andersen showed he had concerns about the paper’s conclusions just months after its publication in March 2020, writing in June 2020, “Our paper was pretty strong in saying ‘there’s no way’ [about lab-made origins], but I have less confidence in that statement at this stage.”

He also took issue with the paper’s incorrect claim that bat-coronavirus research was taking place at labs across the world, when it was actually only happening at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China: “We describe this in the paper and say that this work is performed ‘all of the world,’ but that isn’t true – it has exclusively been going on at WIV.”

Additionally, the messages show the authors were alarmed when documents discussing DARPA’s Project DEFUSE program was leaked, showing the military was aware of, or conducting bat coronavirus research that involved modifying bat coronaviruses with Sars-CoV-2 characteristics, with Andersen noting he needed to “get something back to Tony’s team at NIH,” while Rambaut was cautious not to “get associated with these fuckers,” referring to “the Baric/Daszak shitshow.”

“This is part of a growing public record and today’s release adds significant new detail. One of the authors of Proximal Origin, Eddie Holmes, repeatedly discusses his contacts on the ground in China who feed him exclusive and sensitive information — even going so far as to refer to one as ‘My spy,’ Sen. Paul wrote on X.

Sen. Paul discussed the messages on The First TV’s “I’m Right w/Jesse Kelly.”

Sen. Paul has posted the messages at his “Reading Room,” documenting his ongoing investigation into Covid’s origins and the government’s dangerous Gain-of-Function research.

The messages come as former NIAID Director Anthony Fauci is set to testify before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee chaired by Sen. Paul next week on July 29.
