Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) on Wednesday urged the mayor of Grand Prairie to cancel a water park event designated “Muslim-only,” saying it violated religious discrimination laws.
Organizers of the “DFW Epic EID” event initially advertised their celebration at the Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark with a flyer delineating it was a “Muslim Only Event.”
“For Muslims Only – A Family-Friendly Environment,” the flyer also stated, noting that “Halal food will be served.”
The flyer explicitly noted the event was “Closed To The Public – Muslims Only.”
It also notified guests of a “Modest Dress Code,” with a new flyer updated to say “Modest Dress Code Required,” suggesting “Burins for ladies,” and “Swim trunks & shirts for men.”
A page dedicated to outfit suggestions shows women wearing swimsuits completely covering their bodies except for their hands, feet and face.
The event prompted outrage from conservatives, including The Blaze’s Sara Gonzales, who put the event on blast.
Gov. Abbott caught wind of the event and his office penned a letter to Grand Prairie Mayor Ron Jensen, warning him to cancel the event or risk termination of approximately $530,000 in public safety grants, which would have to be repaid within 30 days.

“The organizer’s website makes matters clearer, stating that ‘[t]his event is closed to the general public’ and ‘at all times’ attendees must ‘dress in accordance with Islamic values,'” the governor’s letter stated. “If there were any doubt remaining, the website dispels it: ‘The entire waterpark has been exclusively reserved for Muslims.'”
“An event at a city-owned pool that was publicly and indiscriminately advertised as ‘Whites only’ would surely violate the Constitution,” the letter argued.
“A city-owned water park in Grand Prairie openly advertised a ‘MUSLIMS ONLY’ event — closed to the general public. That’s religious discrimination,” the governor wrote on X. “It’s unconstitutional. I signed HB 4211 into law — banning Muslim only no-go zones in Texas.”
An updated version of the flyer has eliminated any mention of a “Muslim-only” event.
A statement on the event’s website from the organizer says the event is a “privately organized and privately funded event held through a standard rental of Epic Waters, just like many other private gatherings hosted at the park.”
“At its core, this event is about creating a space where individuals and families, particularly those who value modest dress and a modest environment, can come together and enjoy a recreational setting comfortably.”
“In response to feedback, we have updated our materials to clearly reflect that this is a modest dress-only event, centered around a respectful and family-friendly environment.”
The statement goes on to take offense to the event being seen as exclusionary and discriminatory, stating,

It remains to be seen whether the event is cancelled or goes on as planned after the updates.

I honestly do not like how they are invading our spaces, our country.. but they claim it was a “PRIVATE PARTY” reserved by a private individual.. I think you can legally do that. for Example, you can rent out an entire floor at the Hilton for a Wedding Party, and it can literally be ANY THEME they like.. if they want it to be a FURRY Theme and everyone shows up in a furry costume.. its okay. And guests are already sent out INVITATIONS weeks prior..

Now, about the story: this is no different than what I saw in Hawaii back in 2011 with Japanese-only buses running. I looked at my family in disbelief. And I thought, is this America? These foreign people are welcome, but when they come here specifically with the intent to ban Americans whom they think are a bunch of pigs anyway (but they sure like our setup here), Gov. Abbot is absolutely correct in shutting it down. Why? Because they would do the same to us had the situation been reversed!
