More than 1,700 people, mostly British and Irish citizens, have been forced to stay on the cruise ship “Ambition” after it docked in Bordeaux, France, on Tuesday, with French authorities citing a norovirus outbreak onboard for the decision to ban them from leaving the boat.
Around 50 passengers have reported symptoms, and a 92-year-old passenger died on the cruise Sunday, but the fatality is not believed to be linked to the virus.
The prefect of Gironde “triggered a reinforced health management system, pending the health evaluation on board and the results of the analyses,” a government statement reads.
The University Hospital of Bordeaux examined epidemiological analysis and biological samples to determine an episode of norovirus is indeed taking place on the Ambition.
“Barrier gestures and hygiene rules” on the cruise ship are being strengthened amid the outbreak.
The French government said it will soon allow “non-symptomatic people” on land as long as they continue with “regular hand washing.”
The world is currently on edge when it comes to illnesses on cruise ships due to the Hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship making headlines last week.
However, norovirus is very different from the hantavirus, which is very deadly and is transmitted via close contact between people.

So now every time a group of travelers get the runs, we need to hear about it? I would suggest an inspection of the ship’s kitchen; this doesn’t sound like a pandemic to me. Of course there is disease, that should be expected, cruise ships are known to be filthy. They are like giant floating toilet bowls, I can’t imagine why anyone would pay to travel on them.
