U.S. border authorities intercepted a boat carrying a massive group of illegal aliens in waters near Puerto Rico.

The significant bust unfolded on May 9, but details were just released on Wednesday.

Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations (AMO) officers, working alongside U.S. Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, interdicted a makeshift ‘yola’ vessel carrying 64 illegals bound for U.S. territory.

AMO Maceda Marine Unit detected the wooden craft as it approached the island from the southwest and agents were dispatched to investigate.

Onboard they encountered 58 people claiming to be from the Dominican Republic along with six Haitian nationals.

All passengers were taken into custody and transported to the Mayaguez Port of Entry aboard Puerto Rico Police Joint Forces of Rapid Action vessels.

They were then processed at Ramey Border Patrol Station for removal proceedings.

“This interdiction underscores the relentless commitment of our agents and partners to securing our maritime borders and protecting lives,” said Christopher Hunter, director of the Caribbean Air and Marine Branch.

“The swift, coordinated response prevented dangerous crossings and ensured migrants received necessary care. Our ongoing collaboration is essential to safeguarding Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands from the threats posed by illegal maritime activity.”
