A law enforcement officer is fighting for his life after being shot by a suspect whom he picked up on an Indiana roadside on Friday morning, according to reports.

LaPorte Sheriff’s Department Deputy Jon Samuelson, 33, was on his way to a training session when he stopped to check on a man near a disabled vehicle.

Deputy Samuelson dropped the man off at Franciscan Health in Michigan City after he requested to be taken to a hospital, Fox 59 reports.

Minutes later, Samuelson learned the man may have been involved in “criminal activity at a different location,” according to Indiana State Police (ISP).

Samuelson returned to the emergency room to question the man and during an ensuing altercation, the deputy was shot three times.

The suspect fled into a nearby wooded area but was apprehended a short time later and a firearm was recovered at the scene.

He was identified as Sharod Grafton, a 22-year-old resident of Chicago.

Law enforcement has indicated Grafton was involved in a domestic-related carjacking in Chicago shortly before the shooting.

Samuelson was flown to a hospital in South Bend in critical condition.

His father, a retired Michigan City officer, was on-duty as a security guard at the hospital at the time of the incident.

“It makes us feel angry. This is a senseless shooting that didn’t need to take place. Our officers and deputies and the Laporte County Sheriff’s office and all officers in Indiana and Illinois risk their lives every day. This officer thought he was helping a stranded motorist and it turns into this,” stated ISP spokesman Glen Fifield.

Grafton is being held at Porter County Jail, but his charges remain unclear at this time.
