The US government wants to redirect seized Iranian assets worth billions of dollars to Gulf states that have sustained damages during the war.
The decision came in the wake of a fresh round of Iranian attacks on Kuwait and Bahrain at the end of this week.
A US official told The Epoch Times that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has tasked officials with calculating damages caused by the Iranian regime on neighbors in the region.
The department will look for ways to redirect money from Iranian assets to pay for any future damage.
On Thursday, a senior advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader said a peace deal with the US hinges on the release of some $24 billion in Iranian assets frozen by the US.
Despite the ceasefire between the US and Iran, which came into force in mid-April, the two sides have continued to exchange blows and the US Navy has maintained its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
On Friday, the US military downed a number of drones and struck radar sites along the Strait of Hormuz.
According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), four Iranian drones that posed a direct threat to maritime traffic were shot down, before strikes were launched against radar installations at Goruk and on Qeshm Island.
In a post on X, CENTCOM said US forces acted in self-defense and remained “vigilant and postured to respond to unjustified Iranian aggression.”
The strikes came in areas where drones were launched this week.
Earlier on Friday, Iran claimed it had fired warning shots at US Navy ships in the Gulf of Oman and forced them to retreat into the Indian Ocean.
That claim was rubbished by CENTCOM.
On Thursday night, the US Navy intercepted a sanctioned oil tanker in the Indian Ocean.
The Davina, a supertanker capable of carrying up to two million barrels of crude oil, was placed under US sanctions in 2024 for trading Iranian oil.
“We will continue global maritime enforcement to disrupt illicit networks and interdict vessels providing material support to Iran, wherever they operate,” the Indo-Pacific Command said in a statement on Friday.
