An NYPD detective less than two weeks from retirement was shot in the back during a gunfight with a teen suspect Sunday morning, with the veteran officer expected to survive thanks to a bulletproof vest.

The incident unfolded around 4:45 a.m. as the detective and his partner sat in an unmarked car in Brooklyn when an 18-year-old approached the vehicle with a gun drawn.

“As the two officers got out of the car to try to disarm the suspect, he opened fire, spraying the vehicle with rounds and leaving bullet holes in its front and rear windshields as well as on the passenger side, police said,” according to the NY Post.

Three more police officers were at the scene and returned fire but reportedly did not hit the suspect.

Detective Robert Carroll sustained a contusion to his upper back as the bullet failed to penetrate his ballistic vest.

“His ballistic vest performed exactly as it was designed and today that vest saved his life,” an NYPD spokesman said at a press conference Saturday flanked by Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

A second officer also suffered a contusion to the face and the shoulder.

The suspect was apprehended, but initially refused arrest and had to be tased before being taken into custody.

The NYPD did not release the suspect’s name.

It’s unclear whether the suspect knew the uniformed officers were sitting in the unmarked black Kia SUV police vehicle when he approached.

Chilling images obtained by the NY Post from surveillance cameras near the area showed the teen brandishing the weapon and loading a bullet in the chamber.
