President Donald Trump said he’s unaware of Mitch McConnell’s condition, as questions swirl over the Kentucky senator’s health following a hospitalization for a heart attack.
The president was asked about Sen. McConnell, 84, by a reporter aboard Air Force One Wednesday, responding that he hadn’t talked to him and had “no idea” how he was doing.
Mediaite notes: “Trump has occasionally been critical of McConnell and his wife Elaine Chao, who served as the president’s Transportation secretary during the first administration. After his first term, Trump repeatedly mocked her, calling her ‘Coco Chow.'”
The president’s response comes as McConnell has been hospitalized since June 14 and forced to miss numerous votes, with reports suggesting first responders found him unconscious at his home in DC amid reports he suffered “cardiac arrest.”
While not revealing details about his hospitalization, a spokesperson has claimed he’s recovering and “working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters.”
Several GOP figures have also said they’ve reached out and spoken with McConnell, including CNN contributor Scott Jennings, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-Wyo.).
Meanwhile, there’s speculation of political chicanery afoot, with skeptics claiming McConnell has actually died but that his staff won’t confirm it until after August 3 to stave off a special election that would be triggered if his death is announced before then.
On X, pro-MAGA journalist Laura Loomer reported Monday via a “high level source close to the White House” that “Mitch McConnell is officially brain dead,” adding, “He’s not coming back.”
Republican Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-Ind.) urged his fellow Republicans on Wednesday to press for answers, admitting he doesn’t know “if he’s alive or has passed away.”
Democrat Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear has also called on McConnell’s team to share a health update “amid growing concerns around the Senator’s ability to serve.”
“Over the last several weeks, Kentuckians have grown increasingly concerned about the health and well-being of Sen. McConnell,” Beshear said in a statement. “As Governor – and a fellow public official who understands the commitment we’ve made to the people we serve – I am requesting the Senator provide an update on his current health status.”
