Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) deployed a fake southern accent over the weekend while campaigning in Tennessee.
The far-left Democrat congresswoman Squad leader from the Bronx adopted a preacher-style articulation during a Get Out The Vote rally in Memphis on Friday, while stumping for Rep. Justin Pearson (D-Tenn.).
“We cannot afford to leave Tennessee behind,” said Ocasio-Cortez in a Kentucky-fried tone, flanked by fellow Squad member Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.).
“We cannot afford to leave Kentucky behind, Alabama behind, Mississippi behind, Georgia behind, South Carolina behind,” she added, peppering in an unmistakable southern twang.
Ocasio-Cortez also turned heads when she echoed previous incendiary remarks, proclaiming it was “time for the North to roll up to the South,” adding, “We will not be chased out of places anymore, brothers and sisters.”
The brazen code switch is a hallmark of Democrats, who often try to adapt speech patterns to different audiences.
AOC’s pandering drew comparisons to Hillary Clinton’s failed 2008 presidential campaign, when she put on a fake southern accent while speaking to the people of Selma, Alabama.

Democrat presidential candidate Kamala Harris – of Indian/Jamaican heritage – also raised eyebrows when she used an urban black accent while addressing rally attendees in Atlanta, Ga., amid her failed campaign.

AOC’s fiery rhetoric comes as she’s supposedly considering whether to launch a presidential bid, or run for US Senate in 2028, which would pit her against Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), 74.
She recently won a primary in her district and is expected to keep her seat in the 2026 midterms.
