Congressman Brandon Gill (R-Texas) confronted the director of the Smithsonian American Natural History Museum, blasting the misappropriation of taxpayer money to fund woke initiatives at the historical institution under her leadership.
The incredible exchange unfolded during a House Oversight Subcommittee hearing on “Rewriting American History” Tuesday, with Rep. Gill tearing into Smithsonian administrator Dr. Anthea M. Hartig over various projects undermining the nation’s legacy with racist tropes and leftist revisionist history.
At one point, Gill questioned whether the Smithsonian was “promoting white supremacy culture” after Hartig claimed the institution strived “to be objective,” highlighting a document featured in the museum’s “Mass Action Toolkit” which claimed objectivity was a “core defining aspect of white supremacy culture.”
“Does it concern you that your goal is objectivity? One of your goals is objectivity and your Mass Action Toolkit references objectivity as a defining characteristic of white supremacy culture?” Rep. Gill asked, as Hartig claimed the toolkit was merely “used as a reference.”
Hartig proceeded to tell Gill that Mickey Mouse was “not racist” after the congressman pointed out one exhibit at the Smithsonian said the iconic cartoon was “representing quote ‘vestiges of longstanding traditions of black face minstrelsy.'”
Next, Gill asked whether Hartig believed it was important “to be polite” – to which she agreed – before adding that’s “interesting because the same Mass Action Toolkit that your organization has been promoting references, politeness as a defining characteristic of white supremacy culture.”
Gill followed up by asking Hartig to define “Latina power,” before asking whether it was appropriate to feature the phrase on paraphernalia sold at the museum’s merch store.
Hartig would not say whether she believed it was appropriate to sell the merch.
Elsewhere in the hearing, Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) pressed Hartig on whether the museum’s so-called “girlhood is complicated” exhibits, which featured a trans nonbinary chest binder and an entry from a 6-year-old’s diary saying she prayed every night for a penis, were “appropriate for children.”
Rep. Mary Miller (R-Ill.) similarly confronted Hartig for “welcoming children to an exhibit with sexually explicit material.”
It’s certainly satisfying to see the museum director squirm trying to justify the insane leftist initiatives adopted by the federally/taxpayer-funded institution.
