It appears that far-left New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill opened a big can of worms when she confessed that 6,600 noncitizens were registered to vote in the state and that 400 of them did indeed vote.
The Democratic chief executive blamed a vendor’s software for the blunder. But the software company says the fault lies with New Jersey’s motor vehicles bureau. That bureaucracy registers voters when they apply for or reapply for a license. The bungle, the company said, occurred there.
As well, citing the Department of Homeland Security, President Donald Trump claimed that the real number of registered noncitizens is almost six times more than what Sherrill reported — more than 35,000.
Topping it off, Harmeet Dhillon, assistant attorney general for civil rights, has demanded that Sherrill’s bureaucrats provide detailed information on the 6,600 noncitizens.
Sherrill’s Admission
To her credit, Sherrill confessed the major blunder and said state officials would rectify it.
“A serious software error in New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle System led to the error,” she said.
“These individuals answered ‘no’ when asked on a keypad whether they were a U.S. citizen when applying for drivers’ licenses and identification cards, but through no fault of their own, the system registered them anyway,” Sherrill continued:
This happened under the previous administration and, upon learning this information, I immediately ordered my chief counsel to launch an investigation to get to the bottom of what occurred. I also ordered the removal of any residents from our voter rolls who were erroneously added between June 2023 and June 2024. The new MVC [Motor Vehicles Commission] Administrator that I appointed has begun the process of replacing the vendor responsible for administering the system.
The 400 who voted were “registered as Democrats, Republicans and Unaffiliated voters and were scattered across the state.”
But the vendor, IDEMIA — whose officials were likely and very justifiably enraged — says its software is not at fault.
“IDEMIA works with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, and has for more than 40 years, to support the process through which eligible individuals may indicate their interest in registering to vote when applying for or renewing a driver’s license or state-issued identification card,” the company said:
IDEMIA’s role is to transmit information through the motor vehicle system. The voter registration information is transmitted to the New Jersey Department of State, Division of Elections, which is ultimately responsible for verifying eligibility to vote. Information submitted by IDEMIA must still be validated and adjudicated by the Division of Elections.
As The New American reported yesterday, the New Jersey Globe website identified the motor vehicles bureaucrat responsible for the blunder.
“Substantial responsibility for the extraordinary blunder falls on Latrecia Littles-Floyd, who served as acting MVC chief administrator during the period when the faulty registrations occurred,” the website reported. Noting that Littles-Floyd “resisted efforts” to correct U.S. citizens wrongly removed from the voter rolls, the website reported that “it remains unclear whether Littles-Floyd or senior officials in [former Governor Phil Murphy’s] administration knew about the software error.”
But, again, IDEMIA says the problem was not a software glitch.
The Real Number
Whoever is at fault, President Trump reported what DHS claims is the real number of noncitizens registered to vote in the Garden State.
“35,152 is the new number just released by Homeland Security of non-citizens registered to vote in New Jersey,” he wrote on Truth Social:
These are just the ones that got caught. The real numbers will prove to be many times this amount.
Given Trump’s penchant for exaggerating, it isn’t clear whether that claim is true or not.
