A shocking study has revealed contamination by nearly 20 different pesticides in playparks across Illinois, including agrichemicals that drifted three quarters of a mile from where they were sprayed.
The study, conducted by the nonprofit Prairie Rivers Network, was released days after a state bill was defeated that would have required nearby schools and parks to be notified before pesticide spraying took place.
“There was pretty stiff opposition from the ag industry,” said Kim Erndt-Pitcher, director of ecological health at the Prairie Rivers Network, making reference to House Bill 1596.
“But we all have a right to clean air and healthy places to live and play and work, and these chemicals are trespassing.”
The study used data from monthly testing of 10 different sites at distances ranging from 110 feet to 3,700 feet from sites where pesticides were used, such as farms and golf courses.
Compounds detected included 2,4-D—one of the ingredients of Agent Orange—dicamba, atrazine, acetachlor, glufosinate and metolachlor.
Pesticide exposure is linked to a wide array of health issues and chronic diseases.
A recent report showed that US counties with higher pesticide use have higher cancer rates.
Glyphosate, the most widely used pesticide in the US, has been linked to aggressive forms of cancer, as well as other harms. Manufacturer Bayer is facing billions of dollars in class-action lawsuits for harms attributed to Roundup, which contains glyphosate.
When a large-scale study of glyphosate in urine samples was carried out, 80.2% of Americans over the age of six had detectable levels of the chemical in their samples.
A study of pregnant women from the Midwest, where glyphosate is used most extensively for agriculture, showed that 99% of the women surveyed had it in their bodies.
Glyphosate has been shown to cross the placental barrier during pregnancy, and is found in cord blood after birth.
Glyphosate was also discovered in the semen of French men at concentrations four times higher than in the blood. Seventy-three of 128 men tested as part of the study had the chemical in their seminal fluid.

There is a soccer field at an elementary school in my city that sprayed the grass with poison weed killer. They put up a sign that said do not walk on it while it dried. As if drying eliminates the danger of getting cancer from it. Kids obviously fall on the grass while playing and that poison can be absorbed through the skin. Lawsuits have already proved this. They get it on their hands then put their hand in their mouths. The parents didn’t seem to care.
