Vance Luther Boelter, who pled guilty to murdering a Democrat Minnesota lawmaker and her husband last year, was sentenced Thursday to serve two consecutive life sentences in prison, in addition to 40 years.
The federal charges against Boelter, 59, stemmed from a deadly June 14, 2025, attack on two Democrat lawmakers at their homes, including State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, who were critically injured, and State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, whom he fatally shot.
Boelter accepted a plea deal in June on six federal counts, including the two murders, stalking and firearm offenses, in exchange for feds agreeing not to seek the death penalty.
US District Court Judge John R. Tunheim called it “the longest sentence I have imposed after hearing thousands of cases over the years, but I do believe it is deserved,” according to NBC News.
The FBI sought the public’s help and released eerie images from surveillance cameras showing Boelter wearing a hyper-realistic latex old man face mask and a swat vest as he approached the homes’ doors in attempts to impersonate police.
Following the shooting, which Minn. Gov. Tim Walz (D) labeled “a politically motivated assassination,” both sides of the political aisle rushed to paint Boelter as a member of the other’s side, with the left claiming he was a Christian Trump supporter who listened to Infowars.
Meanwhile, conservatives questioned Boelter’s political history, including the fact that he’d been appointed by the state’s previous Democrat governor, Mark Dayton, to the Governor’s Workforce Development Board in 2016 and reappointed by Gov. Walz in 2019 to the same advisory board, seemingly aligning him with the Democrat Party.
Police also located “No Kings” flyers in Boelter’s vehicle at Hortman’s home, with the Minnesota State Patrol later urging people not to attend the events out of an abundance of caution.
The following week, reports claimed Boelter wrote a letter to the FBI claiming he was secretly trained by the U.S. military “off the books,” and hired directly by the state’s Governor Tim Walz to also kill Democrat Senator Amy Klobuchar so Walz could run for her empty Senate seat.
Many also highlighted how Hortman had just days earlier gone against her party, being the only Democrat to vote for a bill that repealed healthcare eligibility for illegal aliens.
