A team of divers conducing a routine maintenance survey of the Converse Reservoir dam near Mobile, Alabama discovered a “grenade-type IED” (improvised explosive device) Tuesday.

The Gulf Coast Regional Maritime Response and Render-Safe Team retrieved the device and preformed a safe-detonation on it as part of a multi-agency effort which included the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI’s Bomb Squad, Mobile Police Department’s Explosive Ordinance Detail, the ALEA Bomb Squad and the Daphne Search and Rescue Team.

The Converse Reservoir and its dam are federally designated critical infrastructure. The Department of Homeland Security was notified of the incident, according to Fox 10 News.

“Our top priority is keeping your drinking water safe,” Bud McCrory, MAWSS director said. “This is an unprecedented threat, and we are fortunate that this device was discovered before it could cause serious damage to our water supply or harm to individuals. We are grateful for the professionalism and competency of our law enforcement partners – as well as the quick thinking of our contractors and divers – in identifying this device and safely destroying it.”
