Ukraine’s capital Kyiv was hit with a barrage of Russian missiles early on Sunday morning, including Oreshnik missiles President Putin has bragged are impossible to intercept.
The attack began at around 1am local time.
At least three people were injured as multiple buildings were struck across the city.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned Russia was preparing a hypersonic missile attack, citing intelligence from domestic and foreign intelligence services including the US.
Russia had hit Ukraine with Oreshnik missiles twice before. President Putin has said the missiles, which travel at a reported speed of more than ten times the speed of sound, cannot be intercepted.
Putin ordered the attack after Ukraine hit a complex in the Russian-controlled Ukrainian region of Luhansk. Putin said the complex was a student dorm, while Ukraine said it had targeted a drone command center.
Last weekend, Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack against Russia across all 14 regions.
The area around Moscow was the worst affected. Three people were killed there, and one was killed in Belgorod.
In Moscow, air defenses intercepted more than 80 drones.
An oil and gas refinery near Moscow appears to have been targeted.
Drone debris also landed within the perimeter of Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport.
Russia and Ukraine have returned to open hostilities after a three-day ceasefire around Russia’s Victory Day celebrations.
As his military forces prepared for the annual Victory Day parade in Moscow to commemorate the end of World War II, Putin told reporters, “I think it’s coming to an end, but it’s still a serious matter.”
Russia still controls about 20% of Ukraine’s pre-2014 territory, including the Crimea and parts of the Donbas region.
In recent weeks, Ukraine has stepped up attacks on Russia’s oil infrastructure.
Ukrainian officials say Moscow’s oil revenue is directly financing the war, making it a fair target.
Russia’s oil-refining is now at a 17-year-low of about 4.7 million barrels a day.
Moscow has lost about $7 billion in oil revenue since the start of the year.

I thought Russia would send a real message by now and take out a billionaire who is using their country as a drone development, testing and proving ground, while raking in more billions.
