Spencer Pratt has drawn level in the polls with incumbent Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.

A poll taken by the California post puts Pratt on 30.1%, compared to 29.5% for Bass, ahead of next week’s primary.

Socialist Nithya Raman is at third place on 23.4%.

Voters blame Bass for the city’s homelessness problem and lack of affordability, and say the city is heading in the wrong direction.

Pratt has surprising strength among Hispanic voters: he leads Bass 33% to 24% among this key demographic.

John McLaughlin, CEO of McLaughlin & Associates, who helped carry out the poll, said the race is far more competitive than many thought it would be.

“I think the mayor’s race is a lot more volatile,” McLaughlin said.

“Normally it’s a slam dunk for the Democrats, but it’s being driven by the negatives on Bass.

Just 32% of voters approve of Bass and her performance, while 66% disapprove—41% strongly.

Sixty-five percent hold an unfavourable view of her.

“Karen Bass has a huge disapproval, and she has a significant unfavorable rating,” McLaughlin said.

As The New York Post notes, “The former reality television star [Pratt] has electrified the race with his groundbreaking social-media focused campaign.

“Pratt’s support continues to surge among voters looking for a dramatic break from traditional Los Angeles politics.”

The polling also reveals that just 5% of voters remain undecided, down from 40% three weeks ago after the first mayoral debate.
