A common health supplement could accelerate the progression of dementia according to new research.

People with Alzheimer’s disease who took the supplement glucosamine were 25% more likely to die within five years than people who didn’t.

Glucosamine is a sugar supplement that’s taken for joint health. More than 40 million Americans take it each year, and it can be bought readily over the counter without a prescription.

Researchers looked at medical records for 65,000 people with either dementia or mild cognitive impairment, which is the clinical name for the early stages of the condition.

In the earliest stages of memory loss, people taking glucosamine were 25% more likely to end up with full Alzheimer’s.

The researchers then conducted experiments with mice to try to understand how glucosamine might negatively affect cognition and drive the progression of dementia.

They found that if they blocked the enzyme that produces sugars like glucosamine in the body, the mice with Alzheimer’s-like cognitive impairment showed better memory.

The researchers believe the sugar may be coating protein and lipid molecules within the brain , causing cells to fail and then die, in turn leading to loss of memory and cognitive function.

Over 7 million Americans aged 65 and over now have Alzheimer’s disease.

  1. Every town has a few bums, so does the comment section on this fine site.

Take Mr. Deception, a leftist noisemaker, with his incessant “blah blah blah Trump’s fault blah blah blah”, and not an iota of reasoning.

  2. My Spice Sage has a wonderful variety of organic powders and teas, very expensive, but I believe a Chinese or Japanese herbalist probably has more knowledge about medications than your average pharmaceutical company. Fifty years ago it was uratic crystals deposited in your joints, that caused joint pain. If your liver is out of order and doesn’t filter your blood efficiently, the uratic crystals end up attached to the nerve endings on the soles of your feet, elbows, and knuckles. Visiting a hot springs, with pea gravel as a floor, crushes those crystals. You notice right away that your feet start itching as the nerve endings are released from bondage.

I am a little weary of supplements that come in pill form. My stepfather, who was 60 but looked like he was 20, gobbled vitamins 3 times a day. He died because his main artery became calcified from too much calcium in his supplementary diet. That was years ago, but I still think about that and I drink protein drinks with a dash of bone broth powder, I noticed it made my fingernails stronger, and yet I believe that like any other fad we would be better off with Chinese medicine.

  3. This is all a LIE. Glucosamine is great for your joints, whether you are a dog or a human. Of course how you get it is what matters. We get it from seafood and shrimp and never even utilize pharmacies. These poor Alzheimer’s patients could be clocking out because of the poison jewce in the warp speed one jab pushed by the Trumpstein Administration, and now it is really catching up with them five to six years later.

    1. Oh sure, you know more than educated researchers. You have no ability to understand the findings whatsoever.

Only a true dullard does not know mass jabbing began under crook Biden, a true dementia patient, who tried to force us all to get it, but courts stopped him.

Mr. Deception’s lies and inaccuracies abound.

  4. I’ve taken it for decades and known others to do the same. I rather think there’s something else they’re not looking at. It pretty much has alleviated my back problems.
