Flight Instructor Jumps to Death With No Parachute Mid-Lesson – Leaving Student Pilot to Land Plane

Tragedy unfolded over the skies above Argentina last week as a flight school instructor announced he would leap to his death mid-flight during a lesson, leaving his student to land the plane alone.

The incident happened Saturday near Toledo, roughly 400 miles northwest of Buenos Aires, as Flying Parrot Córdoba flight instructor and veteran pilot Leandro Andres Bertazzo, 42, flew a Cessna 150G with an inexperienced student.

The student, 22-year-old Rosario, says at one point Bertazzo unbuckled his seatbelt, removed his headgear and turned to her and said, “You know what you have to do, carry on,” before opening the door, and leaping out of the plane.

Despite being in shock, Rosario was able to relay the tragedy to people on the ground and was talked through landing the plane.

In an interview with Argentinian media outlet Todo Noticias, Flying Parrot Cordoba director Eduardo Alvarez commended the student for being able to stick the landing under pressure.

“Very clear, decisive, mature, and professional,” Alvarez remarked. “She was very shaken, but with complete professionalism, she piloted the plane to the airfield and landed perfectly. She maintained a very high level of training and professionalism.”

Alvarez also noted it would have been extremely difficult to open the plane’s door midair, comparing it to attempting to open a car door at 124 miles per hour.

The director said the act caught him off guard, but that Bertazzo had recently been admitted to a psychiatric facility for mental health problems, explaining, “He had been in a neuropsychiatric institute, but nobody knew about it. Only his family.”

The aircraft reportedly sustained no damage, and was seized amid an ongoing investigation.
