A major error at the Department of Motor Vehicles in New Jersey resulted in 6,600 noncitizens being registered to vote, with some 400 able to cast votes in elections, the state’s governor revealed.
New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill (D) held a press conference Tuesday announcing the revelations, blaming a “serious software issue” at the Motor Vehicles Commission for registering thousands of noncitizens to vote between June 2023 and June 2024.
“In the case of this error, some individuals indicated that they weren’t citizens and weren’t eligible to vote, but the software registered them anyway,” Sherrill told the press, adding that “The error in the software was corrected a year later in June of 2024.”
“These individuals answered ‘no’ when asked on a keypad whether they were a U.S. citizen when applying for drivers’ licenses and identification cards, but through no fault of their own, the system registered them anyway,” she explained.

The governor added that of the 6,600 noncitizens registered in error, less than 400 people were able to vote in New Jersey, with registrations split amongst Democrat, Republican and Unaffiliated voters and spread across the state.
It was unclear whether the errant voters voted in local, state or federal elections.
“We have no evidence at this time that any elections were swayed,” the governor told a reporter about the issue that predates her tenure.
“This entire situation is unacceptable,” Sherrill said. “It’s unacceptable that the vendor released software with such a glaring error, it’s unacceptable that the MVC took a year to get this issue fixed and it’s unacceptable that no one in the previous administration brought this to light, demanded accountability, or took action when it happened years ago.”
“I want to underscore how seriously I take this matter,” she wrote in a statement on social media. “As a military veteran who swore an oath to defend our Constitution, and as a former federal prosecutor, I believe the integrity of our elections is fundamental to our democracy. I am appalled by the reckless failures that allowed this to happen and the lack of transparency shown by those in charge at the time. This failure didn’t occur under my watch, but accountability starts now. I am taking action to prevent anything like it from occurring in the future and make sure those responsible are held accountable.”
The revelation follows the Department of Homeland Security just last week accusing New Jersey of having 35,152 noncitizens registered to vote, and comes as President Donald Trump has been pushing Congress to pass the SAVE Act, which among other things would require citizens to present ID when voting.
