A dystopian scene unfolded in China this week as a humanoid robot was filmed kicking a small boy in the stomach during a martial arts demonstration.

The viral incident unfolded at an amusement park in Xinjiang, China, with a clown wig-wearing “G1” model robot from the Unitree company striking the young onlooker in the abdomen as it performed a spinning kick.

The kick sent the boy falling back as he grabbed his chest in pain and friends pulled him back into the crowd.

Shanghai Daily reported the child “was not seriously hurt, but the mother reported the site staff were slow to react.”

The boy was fortunate to escape injury, as The Asia Business Daily reports: “The kicking force of the G1 is about 100 newtons, which is comparable to the impact delivered by a 10-kilogram (22-pound) object.”

The event marks the latest violent G1 incident, as developers race to improve the physical capabilities of humanoid robotics.

Earlier this year, a G1 kicked an onlooker as it malfunctioned and fell over onto the ground during a Michael Jackson dance routine, kicking the man in the nose as it thrashed and flailed.

In another instance, a G1 kicked its human trainer in the groin as it mimicked his martial arts movements.

A G1 robot was also filmed striking an unsuspecting passerby as it left a path during the China Robot Olympics.

The incident is being perceived by many online as a “taste of things to come” as humanoid robots become more pervasive.
