The Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced on Saturday that “it will implement temporary import restrictions on livestock, including horses, from entering Canada from animals that originate from or were present in the State of Texas within 21 days prior to border crossing.”
The move is a precautionary action to mitigate the risk of a flesh-eating screwworm outbreak spreading after two cases were identified in Texas.
“The CFIA will continue to work closely with U.S. counterparts to assess developments and adjust measures as needed,” the Canadian agency stated. “The flesh-eating larvae of this parasitic fly threatens the lives of its host animals. While our colder climate is not hospitable for the long-term establishment of the fly in Canada, they can survive shorter periods of time in the summer months. Taking this action now is an appropriate risk mitigation measure to prevent its introduction and protect animal health.”
Canadians traveling to Texas with pets are also encouraged to “remain vigilant and inspect their pets regularly for any signs.”
The announcement follows confirmation from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) that the parasite has now been found in a second calf in Texas, the leading U.S. beef and cattle producer.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared a state of disaster on Friday, citing the “imminent threat” posed by the outbreak, adding, “This is likely to spread over the course of the summer.”
ZeroHedge reported earlier this week, “Concerns over the New World screwworm (NWS) have been building for the last 12 months as the deadly cattle parasite spread through Mexico and the Trump administration attempted to prevent its spread into the U.S. Those concerns have now turned into red alerts after the USDA confirmed a single case in Texas, marking the first U.S. detection in years.”
The timing of the detection is awful considering American cattle numbers are “already at a 75-year low, beef prices are at record highs, and meatpackers are under pressure from fewer and more expensive animals.”
